Therapeutic Area Spotlights
CNS & Mental Health Trials
Metabolic & Obesity Trials

Oncology Trials
Immunology & Inflammation Trials

SCOPE’s Inaugural Therapeutic Area Spotlights stream.

Clinical development strategies and operational models continue to evolve as sponsors navigate increasingly complex therapeutic landscapes, rapidly advancing science, and growing expectations for patient-centric research. While many challenges are common across clinical trials, each therapeutic area presents unique considerations that influence study design, site engagement, patient recruitment and retention, data collection, regulatory strategy, and overall trial execution.

This year's TA Spotlights stream zeroes in on the industry's fastest-moving sectors: CNS & Mental Health, Metabolic & Obesity, Oncology, and Immunology & Inflammation. The stream brings together industry leaders, sponsors, CROs, sites, and technology innovators to explore the latest trends, innovations, and best practices shaping clinical development across these key areas of research. Through real-world case studies, expert presentations, and interactive discussions, attendees will gain insights into emerging operational models, advances in digital technologies and AI, evolving patient engagement strategies, novel endpoint development, regulatory considerations, and approaches to improving trial efficiency and outcomes.

For leaders who have spent their careers developing medicines, the experience of navigating a rare disease within their own family can bring an entirely different perspective to the urgency, complexity, and human impact of drug development. This fireside conversation will explore that intersection: what changes when an industry leader experiences drug development and clinical research as a parent, what the industry can learn from that perspective, and how it can inform the way we develop medicines and design clinical trials for patients and families.

This session will showcase AbbVie's innovative Mental Health Think Tank, an employee-driven engagement model that harnesses the lived experiences of employees affected by mental health conditions to inform neuroscience strategy and patient-centered drug development. The presentation will describe the development and impact of the Think Tank, with a spotlight on findings from the poster, Mental Health Stigma and Language May Be Associated With Self-Perception and Treatment Engagement, demonstrating how employee-generated insights can enhance understanding of stigma, treatment engagement, patient experience, and future clinical development efforts.

Robin Kuprewicz, Director, Clinical Trials, Psychiatry, Georgetown University , Dir Clinical Trials , Psychiatry , Georgetown Univ

Recruiting patients into CNS trials can be particularly challenging when populations are small, geographically dispersed, and managing complex neurological and behavioral symptoms. Using Huntington’s disease as a case study, this presentation will explore barriers to trial participation and the additional mental health considerations that can influence recruitment, retention, and the overall participant experience. The session will also examine practical approaches for building appropriate mental health support into trial planning, including integrating trained professionals into the study team and providing continuity of support throughout—and at the conclusion of—the trial.

METABOLIC & OBESITY TRIALS

The Weight of Stigma: Rethinking Patient Trust and Retention in GLP-1 and Obesity Clinical Trials

Michelle Cardel, PhD, MS, RD, FTOS, Senior Medical Director, Medical Affairs, Kailera , Senior Medical Director; Faculty & Co-Director for the Center for Integrative Cardiovascular & Metabolic Disease , Medical Affairs , Kailera Therapeutics; University of Florida

Weight bias and stigma remain pervasive in healthcare, driving avoidance and eroding trust including in clinical trial settings. This session explores how weight stigma affects health outcomes and participant engagement, and equips clinicians, scientists, and study teams with practical tools to create more comfortable, respectful trial experiences that improve participant retention. Topics include compassionate person-first communication, staff training, and tactical environmental changes that reduce barriers and improve the participant experience.

When the Endpoint Changes the Site: Rethinking Site Strategy for Next-Generation Obesity Trials

Obesity trials once asked one question: how much weight was lost? Today's science demands more: what was lost, what was preserved, and how do we prove it? As body-composition imaging becomes central to next-generation endpoints, site strategy hits a wall: the site with the patients isn't always the site that can deliver the data. The future belongs to networks built for capability, not just enrollment.

PANEL DISCUSSION:
GLP1 Trials: Challenges and Solutions

Kaushal Mehta, Portfolio Director, Novo Nordisk , Portfolio Director , Novo Nordisk

GLP-1 trials are evolving rapidly, bringing new challenges for clinical development and trial execution. This panel will explore issues across recruitment, retention, dosing, adherence, endpoints, and patient populations. Panelists will share practical experiences and discuss approaches to addressing these challenges, improving trial design and execution, and adapting clinical development strategies as GLP-1 therapies expand across indications.

The next generation of oncology research sites are ready - but too often, sponsors and CROs don't know how to find them, evaluate them, or support them up to succeed. This session draws directly from SCRS's Oncology Emerging Site Pathways Workstream to offer a practical, inside look at what a confident emerging site partnership actually requires in oncology. Attendees will walk away with a replicable framework for turning first-time sites into long-term, high-performing research partners.

Imaging Biomarkers in Oncology Trials

Angela Becker, Associate Director, Oncology Clinical Imaging, GSK , Assoc Dir Oncology Clinical Imaging , GSK

Imaging biomarkers are integral to oncology trials, but their implementation brings complex operational and logistical requirements. This talk will explore how to manage imaging protocols, site training, image acquisition, data transfer, central review, and quality control across clinical studies. It will highlight practical approaches for building efficient imaging workflows, reducing variability, and ensuring consistent, high-quality data throughout the trial.

Indication, Patient, Site: AI-Led Decisions Upstream of Oncology Trial Execution

Oncology trials increasingly fail on decisions made before a protocol is final: which indication to pursue, which patients to define as eligible, and where those patients actually are. This session covers how Recursion applies AI across all three — human genomics and causal inference to prioritize indications and shape eligibility, and real-world evidence to ground site and country selection, which has moved from months to hours. Enrollment is running 1.3–1.6x historical benchmarks. The session will also cover what didn't transfer between indications, where data access constraints bind, and the decisions we deliberately kept with humans.

This session will explore the shield & compass framework to I&I trials where data sciences acts as a true data guardian and navigates the complexities of I&I trials (the compass) while fiercely protecting data purity and patient safety (the shield). Topics to be covered include: the new I&I trial reality, upstream gatekeeping, mastering the vendor ecosystem: proactive eCOA governance, the zero-latency pipeline, and the adjudication challenge.

Using Objective Measures of Physical Activity, Sleep, and Breathing for Disease Profiling of Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Sjögren’s Disease

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Sjögren's disease (SjD) frequently experience fatigue, sleep disruption, and reduced physical activity, yet evaluation largely depends on subjective assessments. We conducted a 6-month in-home study involving 29 SLE, 29 SjD, and 37 matched healthy participants using wearable actigraphy and contactless radio-frequency sensing to continuously monitor activity, sleep, and breathing. Digital measures revealed reduced physical activity in both diseases, while SLE participants also exhibited poorer sleep quality and increased breathing rate and variability. These findings support passive sensing as a scalable approach for objectively monitoring disease burden and treatment response in autoimmune disorders.
